Springfield drivers spend plenty of time around busy roads like I-95, I-395, I-495, Franconia Road, Backlick Road, and the mixing bowl. During the summer, heat and heavy traffic can make car trouble even more frustrating.
That is why every driver should keep a road trip emergency kit in the car. It is not about expecting something to go wrong. It is about being ready if it does.
Start with jumper cables or a portable jump starter. Hot weather can be hard on batteries, especially if yours is older. If your car does not start in your driveway, at work, or while traveling, jumper cables can help. A portable jump starter is even better because you do not need another vehicle nearby.
Water is another important item. Keep a few bottles in your car for you and your passengers. If you are waiting for help on a hot day, water helps keep everyone more comfortable. It can also be useful in some vehicle emergencies, but never open the radiator cap while the engine is hot.
Pack a flashlight too. If you need to check a tire, look under the hood, or find something in the trunk at night, a flashlight is much easier than using your phone. Keep extra batteries with it.
A portable tire inflator is a smart item for highway driving. Tire pressure can change in summer heat, and long drives can make tire problems worse. If your tire pressure light comes on, an inflator can help you add air until you can get the tire checked. A tire pressure gauge is also helpful before a trip.
Every car should have a first aid kit. Bandages, wipes, gauze, gloves, and pain reliever can help with small cuts, scrapes, headaches, or minor injuries while you are away from home.
Phone chargers are important too. Keep a charger in your vehicle and add a backup power bank if possible. Your phone may be needed for directions, roadside help, or checking in with family.
Other useful items include snacks, hand sanitizer, paper towels, gloves, a towel, a small blanket, a rain poncho, and reflective warning triangles. If you ever need to pull over on a busy road, being visible is important.
Before a longer summer drive, have your vehicle checked. Tires, brakes, fluids, battery, belts, hoses, lights, and air conditioning should all be ready before you leave.
